Sakoku occurred in the Edo era (17th century) of Japan. Sakoku was a period in Japan in which the country attempted to isolate itself from the rest of the world. This historical event is often overlooked in American historical texts but is a significant event in Japan. The flash animation uses both English and Japanese text as well as graphic symbols to represent both the events during this period, most notably the enforced opening of Japanese ports by foreign interests primarily from Europe.
Aki Takebayashi: was born in Osaka, Japan, and moved to Hawai’i in 2001 to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Department of Art and Art History.
