Finally posting up the video of the lecture that Jennifer Siegal (Office of Mobile Design) presented at the School of Architecture, University of Hawaii at Manoa. While Jennifer was here, she also served on the jury for our Competition for New Community Architecture. The winning design is from Luke Altenau and Katie Coffman. Work on the structure will begin soon and will be unveiled in late August 2010 at the opening of Ballet Hawaii‘s season.

The Gift of Mobility

Being a person with a graphic design background and a strong interest in architecture, I was especially excited to see Jennifer Siegal’s lecture. It might have been her portfolio of work or the title of her lecture, but for me, it was her portrait. Symmetrical: her arms fallen comfortably to her sides with her hands meeting in front as she holds a pair of red wings firmly… held high enough as if she is offering it to you, the viewer. The gift of mobility.

Her work is clean, sophisticated, well thought out, and representative of our times. It has everything you need in a structure… and nothing you don’t need. It is an expression of our values of today combined with our needs of tomorrow. (Tomorrow is the key word.) She said, “When you’re not pushed to perform, there’s a reluctance to see beyond what’s already here.” Siegal has overcome this.

Using reclaimed and high-performance materials, she designs modular pieces, prefabricated, then assembled on site to what will become… a home. “These buildings have no borders,” she said.

After the lecture, the young aspiring architect beside me said, “She’s everything I thought she would be: strong, intelligent, and confident.” He forgot to add “brilliant.”

Tune in to Hawaii Public Radio on Friday, April 2. Noe Tanigawa is interviewing Jennifer Siegal, the founder and principal of the Los Angeles-based Office of Mobile Design (OMD) on KHPR 88.1 FM at 7:30 am and 4:30 pm. The interview will also run between 8:00-8:30 am and at 1:30pm on KIPO 89.3 FM. If you miss it on air, the interview will also be available online later in the day at www.hawaiipublicradio.org.

Jennifer Siegal is presenting a talk titled “Generation Mobile: the Death of Distance” at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture on Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 6:00-7:30 pm. This event is FREE.

Interisland Terminal and the University of Hawaii School of Architecture are sponsoring Jennifer Siegal’s lecture at the University of Hawaii. Jennifer Siegal is also one of the juror‘s of Interisland Terminal’s Competition For New Community Architecture. The announcement of the winner of the Competition For New Community Architecture will take place on April 15, 2010.
